I went to this retreat not really knowing what to expect and came out a new person.
I initially signed up as a final attempt to overcome 10 years of sleep trouble. I was looking for a ‘quick fix’ and did not get it. In fact, I averaged about 3 hours of sleep a night while on the island and it didn’t get much better after returning home.
HOWEVER, after implementing Sue’s routines, exercise regimen and dietary changes (and sticking with them over the long term) I am now sleeping through the night much more regularly than before. Tiredness, irritability and fatigue have been replaced by a new found vitality I never thought possible. My outlook on life has improved tenfold and my mind is clearer than ever before.
My time with Sue I will never forget. What an incredibly dedicated and wise woman. Nor will I forget the awesome group of people who toughed it out with me during that week. Is Sue a bit of a hard arse? You bet, but that’s exactly what I needed to get my butt into gear and get my life together.

Thank you Kangaroo Island for the recalibration… you were just what I needed!!! Sue McCarthy is a legend… the retreat is more like a gentle holistic health boot camp. I was taught how to detox and get back in shape physically and mentally (it’s not like Golden Door etc) it’s a spiritual health and mental reboot… drinking 8-10 litres of water a day, walking 10-20 kms a day plus, yoga, lessons in nutrition and beach swims daily… for anyone who is feeling stressed, over it, or burnt out from life I highly recommend this camp. It was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done but I did it! And loved it! And a little bit wiser about nutrition, life and me… I just wish I had met Sue 10 years ago… life would have been easier and healthier!

I have recently spent a week on Kangaroo Island with Sue McCarthy. Her name was recommended through a mutual friend who had completed a detox program facilitated by Sue. Initially I hesitated to make a booking, assuming I could easily remove my unhealthy habits with sheer personal willpower. After a year I recognised the decision to attend a health retreat may be the beneficial recharge and removal of unhealthy habits that was in order for me to make these changes. Any time in your life is a good time to attend, for me, I was in need to clear my body and mind. I recently went to KI for my first retreat. It is a time for you to focus just on yourself and think about your health in a very intense and beneficial way that so many people never have the opportunity to do. I was anxious about how I would manage everything having never been on such a retreat before and being at the top end of the age limit however Sue is so supportive of everyone and is only ever positive and makes sure everyone’s needs are covered from the return client to the new ones like myself. This was my first Dynamic Detox and Sue’s program had been highly recommended by friends. I really didn’t know what to expect and was apprehensive at first but as soon as I met Sue, my gut told me straight away that I’d made the right decision. I found the week at KI to be one of the most enlightening and exhilarating weeks in my life and left feeling energised and motivated for life again. I haven’t felt this well in years and I can wholeheartedly say, it’s the best money i’ve ever spent on myself.
Sue is a special person and somehow seems to know more about you than you realise yourself - I was instantly drawn to her positive attitude, in depth knowledge and zest for life. She pulls no punches and will tell you exactly what she thinks about your way of life.

This is my first dynamic program at KIHR, already I can see the concrete results in my life. Before I went on my program I could run 7 km’s in 27 minutes on a good day. After my first program and the preparation period before and after, I can do the same run in 24 minutes.

Firstly if you’re coming to KIHR to be pampered then you’re in for a shock. It’s tough but the results are amazing. The pre visit cleansing that Sue sends you is essential, I actually doubled my exercise the week before I came and no coffee. This allowed me to keep up, push myself and get the most out of my detox. I was lucky enough to have Sue one on one, great conversation and teaching, swimming with the dolphins was a bonus… I walked 80km, rode 147km, drank 41 litres of water, lost 4kg and shed 37cm of toxic waste from my body. My mind is clear again and I’m looking forward to the next 30 day follow up. Sue is great but you must come with an “I can” attitude.

Sue’s down-to-earth, no-bullsh*t, no-latest-fad approach has been honed from her 40 years experience and experimentation. Sue’s way is second to none.
It’s more than a detox or health retreat, it is a reminder as to how we should all be living: living simply without clutter, eating for energy, and always moving, cleansing and nourishing our bodies. But the System forgot to tell us and instead we have assumed a sedentary, screen-focused, remote control, instant-grat lifestyle where we sip on our lattes, order pizzas with cheese crusts that we don’t need and surf through 57 random channels while doing our shopping online, etc… all without leaving the comfort of our chairs. A trip to KI Health Retreat has been the best investment I have ever made in my life.
In my late forties, quite overweight, a BMI of 35.3, despite efforts in the gym and various fad diets, lots of life and business pressures led to some serious anxiety and depression issues. Being pretty messed up both physically and mentally, I negotiated with Sue to do a double stint dynamic detox (two programs back to back).
From the day I decided to commit to Sue’s program, I started my health improvement journey. About five weeks ahead of my booking I decided to give up stimulants (coffee, alcohol and processed sugars) and increase my water consumption to make the detox program more comfortable. (If you are contemplating a trip to the retreat I would recommend following this approach.) In the month leading up to Sue’s preparation eating plan I lost 5 kgs of weight. During the preparation eating program I lost another 3 kgs. In week one of the KI trip I lost 4kgs and in the second week I dropped another 5 kg.
It is now about 4 weeks since completing my KI visit and I have lost a further 5 kgs. That’s a total of 22kgs, with my BMI now 28.4! (still technically overweight, hey, but I’m a big framed guy and carry a little muscle). People who haven’t seen me for a while often do a double take, not believing the transformation. I’ve got a couple of kgs to lose to get to my goal weight and am now confident I’ll achieve that in another couple of weeks.
Now you are probably thinking how do you get those results? Quite simply, it all starts by having the determination to want to make positive changes in your life. Sue’s program will guide you carefully through a comprehensive detox process, which can initially be a little uncomfortable and confronting. Daily saunas, stretching, a variety of exercises including long beach walks and swimming in one of the most beautiful beaches in the world – Emu Bay are another component. Sue’s nutrition program completes the perfect environment to achieve your goals. Finally, Sue teaches you how to modify your food, hydration and exercise habits to maintain a fit, healthy and vibrant lifestyle. When required, Sue is there to motivate you and occasionally provide a little ‘tough love’.
Importantly, you come away from the retreat with the knowledge that you don’t have to make massive changes to your lifestyle to improve your health. In my case, I modify recipes that both I and my family love, to be nutritionally balanced and fulfilling. Pleasingly we now have many family conservations about choosing better nutrition options.
Warning, the trip can be a little more expensive than you might think. In the last few weeks I have had to replace the contents of my entire wardrobe (except for my socks and shoes!).

I chose KI Health Retreat because it was the only one I could find that seemed focused on hard work & not pampering. After ringing many health retreats, Sue was the last one I rang and noticed she was not scripted in her approach. Sue spoke straight out and upfront, I also had the opportunity to have one-on-one with her at the Retreat. I was amazed at her fitness and vitality, her knowledge of the human body and foods for life. The detox at first was hard and challenging, but after 2 days I started to feel different mentally and physically. I now look at foods differently and life itself. On the dawn of my 50th I summited Kilimanjaro after a 7 hour final ascent. During this I gave gratitude for my time with you in September. I believe that had it not been for those magical 5 days, my body would not have been in such great endurance shape and the impact of high altitude may well have been too much for me. Instead, I coped incredibly well, so much so my guide and team of porters nicknamed me “Commando”. They simply couldn’t believe a) my age and b) how I just kept going and going throughout the 7 days without a single sign of altitude problems… something they said is very rare.
